Real and would-be writers can live out their Walter Mitty fantasies at the childhood home of James Thurber.

History Lesson
Thurber House, a restored Victorian home built in 1873, is located in the east end of downtown Columbus--an area of town threatened by an imaginary flood in one of Thurber's stories. The renowned humorist, cartoonist and playwright featured the house in many of his stories. Thurber House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and its exterior renovation is based on a 1910 photo. The interior includes family possessions and detailed furnishings from the era. His parents' bedroom now serves as a museum displaying manuscripts, cartoons and Thurber memorabilia.
What's Happening Now
The attic where Thurber's grandfather resided now hosts various writers-in-residence. Thurber House sponsors an "Evening with Authors" (as well as a summertime picnic) series featuring nationally prominent writers and artists, a bookstore and children's writing seminars.
A Literary Boo
Beware of the back staircase to the dining room, made famous in his story, "The Night the Ghost Got In."
