mean old lady
by FunkyFish
My girlfriend and I have wanted to try this place for awhile now. We always sit at the sushi bar when we go out for sushi, unfortunately we were sat next to the meanest old korean lady we have ever seen. She was so rude to the staff the entire time we were there. Our server actually apologized to us because we had to sit next to where she eats. She kept yelling at the servers for no apparent reason. As far as we could see she has no reason to be there, except to be mean to her staff. It wasnt just the servers either, she was possibly meaner to the kitchen staff. Our server also told us there is alot of staff turnover, we quickly understood why. Who would want to work for such a mean old lady?? She single-handedly ruined our experience at Shoku, and we will not return solely based upon the fact that she will still be there. This is a shame because this restaurant has great potential, but she is holding it back. The owner needs to wise up and get her out of there!
- Pros: waitstaff. sushi.
- Cons: everything else.
So bad that I joined just to warn you all
by Usodarake
My experience was so bad that I joined Citysearch as soon as I got home just to warn you guys of this place.
First of all, they refused a gift certificate that we had but at least they were honest about it and told us before we ordered. Since this was my first time there, we decided to give them a try anyways - bad idea. I had a bad feeling about this place when they claim to be a Japanese restaurant yet mispelled Nabeyaki Udon as Nabuyaki Udon on the menu.
It took them over 30 mins just to get us only a couple pieces of sushi. Not only that, every single aspect of their sushi was bad.
1. The sushi rice was warm - it is supposed to be room temperature!
2. The rolls were made by a total amateur. The seaweed on the sushi was broken and torn causing whatever was inside to spill out.
3. They did not use sushi rice (short grain rice)
4. THE FISH WAS NOT FRESH - it left such a nasty fishy taste in your mouth - a sign of spoiled fish.
Nothing about this place is good besides the fact that our water was refilled promptly. The food is way way overpriced for what you get. Come on Shoku, $18 for chicken? Who do you think you are, Mitchell's Steakhouse? At least at Mitchell's you are getting great service and atmosphere. Shoku is a dump and so is the food.
Avoid this place at all cost.
- Pros: Water was refilled promptly
- Cons: Food, Timeliness, Overpriced
Great Columbus spot for sushi!
by tenthmuse
If you like sushi and you live in Columbus, there's no reason not to go here. I'm loyal to Haiku, but went to Shoku with my husband and four friends Saturday night, and was very pleasantly surprised! I've read some bad reviews on here, and I just don't get it. We ordered 8 or 9 kinds of sushi, and all of it was fresh and delicious. The atmosphere was much better than I thought it would be. The decor is lovely, and our waiter was absolutely wonderful. I will definitely go back.
- Pros: Ambiance, food
- Cons: Parking is always an issue in Grandview
Better than Haiku
by whiskeydbl
I have been to Haiku and Shoku many many times. I have finally decided that Shoku is better. I have never had a bad meal at Shoku and the restaurant is clean! The service is dull and somewhat slow, but I have yet to come across anyone rude. The price is a little high for the amount of food you receive, but it is delicious. Overall good.
pay attention folks

I went into shoku three times to be fair before i critiqued the establishment. The food was always overcooked, the rice was yellow, and the freshness was extremely questionable. Two out of the three times i ate there, people were arguing at the top of there lungs. I paid $12 for a roll that consisted of two shrimp and mayonnaise w/ tempura flakes on top. I ordered a tofu dumpling soup twice in a row(1st and second visit) and it was a totally different dish each time. My guest ordered a salad that contained moldy lettuce. We ordered an almond beef which contained the fattiest yet very dry misc. beef and absolutely no almonds. To end the meal, i had some mango ice cream that was freezer burnt and the worst cup of coffee i have had since high school. The clincher is the price. We paid $60 for the worst meal i could remember in a decade. You'd be better off spending $20 at your fast food Asian restaurant because you won't feel like an idiot for spending so much on poorly made food. Good luck Shoku.
- Pros: cute waitresses
- Cons: everything else
BYOB Sunday
by hwf
I was prompted to write a review after I read the last couple - my experience at Shioku was great and I would return in a heartbeat. We just walked by on a sunday evening and decided to stop in. We were seated immediately on the patio, and the waitstaff was friendly. I was suprised to discover that they are BYOB on Sundays, and they recommended a great wine shop across the street. The sushi was excellant, can't wait to go enjoy another sunday evening there!
- Cons: parking could potentially be a challenge
Terrible Service, Clueless Manager
by HK543
My friends and I just ate at Shoku and the service was horrendous. Our waitress was very rude and treated us like we were interrupting her day. (I got better service at the movie theater concession stand later that night). When we asked for something, she barely answered us and walked away. I called the manager after we left, and she was as clueless as the waitress was rude! She also poured water down a customer's leg at the next table over--not only did she not apologize, she didn't even acknowledge that she did it! The food was ok but it's definitely not worth that kind of service!
- Pros: Outdoor patio
- Cons: Horrible service, overpriced
Horrible Service
by lc2
2nd time there- at a table for 45 minutes. No drinks, no edamame, no sushi - only 3 tables in the entire restaurant during lunch. Ridiculous. Don't waste your time - sushi wasn't that great, Kooma downtown has much better service, better sushi, and better prices!
- Pros: None
- Cons: Service, price, sushi
Americ-Asian and bland
by staarkidd
The atmosphere is pleasant enough but the food is about as Americanized as you can get. I ordered pad thai and it came without cilantro, lime or chili sauce. When i asked for these things, the waiter said that they stopped carrying them because the Americans didn't know how to eat pad thai and they went to waste. The sushi was also small. If you want good Asian Fusion, Haiku is MUCH better and about the same price.
- Pros: quiet and ambient
- Cons: americanized and bland
Still best sushi in town
by DonCornelius
For real sushi fan, this is the place. Is always clean, fresh. Staff is turned over in recent years but same owner, same manager...same grandma watching over. Anyone who complains about a wait for sushi.........needs to get a fish sandwich and McDonalds.....you wait for sushi....eat, drink, enjoy.
Of course you are there and you see any 5'4 short angry old men at a table with a date for hire...move on, he is a mean one...Other than that, it is still best dining experience in the 43212 zip......Next time you go, tell them DON CORNELIUS send you.....one day I will tell them it is me...Peace, Love, and Soooooooooooooul train.
- Pros: service, sushi, clean, nice
- Cons: parking, all of 43212 is lite on parking tho
