Amazing Cinnamon Roll & Great Coffee
by chadsowald
My fiancée and I walked in to French Loaf while we were walking along 5th Ave. We were waiting for my car to get finished being repaired at the nearby Tuffy and saw the store and thought we would go in - we had never been in despite that we must have unknowingly driven by it 15 or 20 times (it is set back from 5th a little). I got a Raisin Cinnamon Roll and a medium coffee (ended up trying both the hazelnut and french roast flavors). My fiancée got an apple danish! My cinnamon roll was amazing and I will definitely be going back for more of them. Thanks.
- Pros: Friendly, good atmosphere, great food!
DO NOT BUY A CAKE FROM THIS BAKERY
by vkentrissmith
If I could give this bakery no stars I would. I recently ordered a ? sheet cake for my brother in-law?s graduation (he was coming in from out of town and I did it as a favor to my mother-in-law). I was beyond disappointed, so much so that I decided to right a review.
When my mother in law came in town and we picked up the cake, she literally fell out of the bakery. The cake was a staggering $85 for what they claim was a ? sheet cake (but looked more like the size of a football field). The cake itself looked fine ? which it should for an additional $15 to decorate, but was mediocre at best. I am a huge fan of cake and will eat just about any kind - professionally made, boxed, what have you, but I could barely choke down half a piece. So not worth the calories - the frosting tasted like twinkie filling ? not the good frosting you expect from a professional bakery, and the cake was just okay. We might as well have picked up a grocery store cake ? it would have been a heck of a lot cheaper and probably tasted better. Bottom line ? the cake was bad and grossly overpriced. I would NEVER recommend this place to anyone.
- Pros: good location
- Cons: the cake - way overpriced and mediocre at best
Great Lunch Option!
by scwkitty
for around $5 you can get a tasty sandwich made in front of you, to die for soups, or a combo of the two. I prefer the basic chicken salad on a criossant, and the croissants are just as buttery and flakey as they look. Also everytime I go in I swear to myself I won't get dessert but I lose every time because they're just that good. French Loaf has never dissappointed me ^_^
- Pros: Fast service, friendly staff
- Cons: parking is limited
A cozy bakery with the best croissants in town.

The Scene
Long before Grandview filled up with trendy restaurants and shops, the French Loaf was the hippest place in the neighborhood. It is possible to eat at one of a handful of small tables in the bakery, but if it's at all crowded, your elbow will get bumped by every passing coffee-seeker. There are tables available outside in the summertime, but the view is of a parking lot, Fifth Avenue traffic and the Big Bear across the street.
The Food
On weekend mornings, picking up a bagful of delicious raspberry, apricot and almond croissants to take home is a tried-and-true way to show loved ones some sweet kindness. For breakfast-beyond the near-perfect, tender, flaky croissants-there are always several varieties of muffins and cinnamon rolls. Take-home dessert options include fruit tarts, petit fours, cookies, cakes and a variety of cheesecakes and pie. As the name implies, the staple of the bakery is French bread; the best loaves for take-home dining are here.
Loved it...

I understand that as of May '02 it's under new ownership. I have been in several times and received great friendly service. The desserts are delicious!! Will definately go back again and again.
