King of Burgers, Burger King

Once, I went on a skiing trip out of town, and the lodge was broiling these wonderful-smelling hamburgers and the aroma wafter through the air up the slopes. I couldn't wait to get off the slopes and get one-- and it was worth the wait. Now, years later, Burger King tantalizes with that same char-broiled aroma. You can have your fancy restaurants or your other chains. Burger King, for me, still makes it impossible to resist their burgers when I pass by. I wish the service in Whitehall, Ohio were better though. They always screw up my order somehow, and once I had a real problem with a South Gahanna restaurant's drive through window service. Enough to make me call the manager the next day and report them.

Founded in 1954, this ultracasual eatery (often with a drive-through) made its name with hamburgers cooked over flames and finished with the customer's choice of toppings. The signature sandwich has always been the Whopper, a quarter-pound burger with tomatoes, lettuce, mayo, ketchup, pickles and onions. The menu also features fish fillets and spicy chicken sandwiches, garden salads with fire-grilled shrimp and chicken, the breakfast "Croissan'wich," crispy onion rings and even veggie burgers.
