The Scene
Prior to 1992, the Franklin Park Conservatory was a dowdy old institution. In 1992, Franklin Park hosted the controversial Ameriflora--the first international flower show in North America commemorating the 500th year of Columbus' encounter with the new world. The Conservatory benefited from the energy and public funds, enabling a rejuvenation of the facility.

The Experience
A five-acre, formally landscaped grand mall leads into the Conservatory. The Botanical Gardens emphasize displays from around the world, while many exhibits successfully rely on a sensory approach to learn about climates like a cool Himalayan mountain, a steamy tropical rainforest or a Pacific island freshwater lagoon. Perhaps the most intriguing annual show is the spring butterfly exhibit. A few visits will bring you through the entire lifecycle of the insect, from larvae to cocoon to butterflies dancing around your head. Don't miss the extensive Japanese garden and Bonsai collections.

Franklin Park Conservatory is truly a treasure in the Near East Side. From the 98 acre beautiful park to the free seasonal displays to the ever changing exhibits throughout the facility, the Conservatory is a joy to visit and live near. Those of us who are fortunate enought to live near this jewel in our central city know the wonders of escaping to this tropical paradise in the middle of one of central Ohio's snowstorms. An afternoon at the Conservatory can take one away to magical lands and sooth the spirit. The tranquil sounds, smells, and sights of the rainforest, desert, or island paradise truly please the soul. Please visit this wonder on the near east side and feel free to bring a picnic and stoll Franklin Park as well.
