Great environment, great prices

by shaun43123

If you are looking for a unique place to eat, try this place! It is down by the Ohio State Campus, so it might be a little crowded, but its worth the trip! Try the meatloaf!

A Columbus Institution

by xerxes31082

For people who remember and love the 'Dube from its glory days, things have changed. The food is much more expensive (though now edible and even good), you can't smoke, but then again there are no more 16 y/o kids trying to get served or playing crappy teen pop on the jukebox. The service is still spotty, although much better than it was and the selection at the bar seems to grow geometrically.

The bar staff are great people - surly and engaging at the same time. You can get a decent if somewhat less than expertly prepared cocktail, and most of the prices aren't bad. You can listen to anything on the jukebox you can conjure in your imagination. PBR tallboys are $1 all the time. There is nothing at all pretentious or affectatious about the 'Dube at all. It is, in essense, the perfect dive.

  • Pros: Barstaff, parking, PBR.
  • Cons: Panhandlers, hipsters.

food has gotten much better recently...

by mambo_jambo

I've lived down the block from the Dube for six years. Up till recently, hamburgers were consistently overcooked, fries were mushy and undercooked, and other diner food - like meatloaf - was even worse. I don't know what happened, but I'm no longer forced to only order the turkey club or breakfast burrito: the burgers are great, other sandwiches are good, even dependable, soups are decent. They no longer make pancakes with bisquick. Still haven't taken a swing at the dinners - meatloaf, turkey dinner, etc. - but I'd bet it would be edible. Also, the service is pretty good these days. And, of course, they now have one dollar PBR tall boys.

  • Pros: plenty o' parking. wear your hipster-iest shirt.

when you're poor....

by xladyrebelx

structurally, this place is a hole in the wall but the food is awesome and it's a great place to hang out when you're on campus, when you're poor, and when you just feel like hanging out any time of the week.

  • Pros: food is good, it's fairly cheap, you can get in and out easy
  • Cons: the place is dirty and run down

rude servers

by ringadingdong

my friend and i upon sitting down in one of the booths was rudely told by a server, "all my tables just filled up, i'm not going to be able to serve you for awhile" and quickly walked away. she didn't even offer us water nor did she give us menus. we barely even saw her and wondered if she was a cook on the side. another table was finished and asked her for the check, she responded, "isorry, but it's swamped, i can't" what the? i think they left without paying. after sitting there for some 20 minutes or more, my friend and i left and went to hound dogs where we were promptly greeted by our server.

this was the worst experience i've had there. the servers in general are rude, slow, and depressing.

  • Pros: open late
  • Cons: rude servers, slow service, pretentious customers

The Dube Rules

by unclefun

I've eaten here for about 10 years now, and it's still a real comfort food, steadying gastronomical rock.

The Dube Rules You

by tribal_level

The Blue Danube, affectionately called "the Dube," is the best late night restaurant in Columbus. But it's not just for night time, it is excellent at all hours of the day. The service nowadays is very good, but it has a reputation for being bad, though I have NEVER had any complaints. The food is excellent as well. They even have a French Dinner platter that consists of 2 grilled cheese sandwiches (Roquefort cheese) and a bottle of Dom Parigon; it's a steal at $125. Also, they have one of the best gyros I have ever had; and their hamburgers are excellent, as are their zesty fries! I HIGHLY recommend the Dube!

  • Pros: Good Juke Box, Good Food, Good Prices
  • Cons: , Can be loud

A hazy shade of late-night culture in the campus area.

by Contributor

The Scene
The Blue Danube has nothing in common with the Johann Strauss symphony or the Hungarian river, except that it's also a touchstone. It originally opened its doors in 1940, and while the ownership has changed, the place hasn't. Since it's one of the only spots near the OSU campus open for meals after midnight, many a local twentysomething has crammed into a blue neon-lit booth to chat, eat fairly cheaply and smoke his or her head off. The waitstaff is hit or miss; bartenders tend to be more reliable.

The Food
Most menu selections are average American fare, although there are a few tastier Greek dishes. But you don't indulge in the chicken and dumplings, burgers and gyros for the taste so much as the fact that they are fuel, and much better fuel than the stuff at the Taco Bell up the street.

The Dube Rocks!

by posterica

The Blue Danube is by far the best bargain in Columbus for great food! Great atmosphere, with a bar setup plus quieter dining towards the back. I spent many a lunch and dinner at the Dube, and it's my first stop whenever I'm back there!
