I was a patient at Parkside back in March of 2005. This facility saved my life. Dr. Edna Jones was the medical director at the facility at the time. I knew at the time she was experiencing issues with the owners of the facility. I have never met a more profound, dedicated, and more professional doctor than her. The staff at the time was great and I kept in touch with others the first year I was sober. I have been sober 8 years this past March. Things must have changed drastically since the 30 days I spent there back in 2005. My whole life opened up to AA and the entire nursing staff was superb . Thank you Parkside and everyone that God put in my life during that time at this facility. I went in a broken man in complete despair and left with hope. They gave me the game plan and direction and I have been using it ever since.
STAY AWAY. The TA's are wonderful, but the administration cares about nothing but money. They lose patients money and then refuse to reimburse it even with a receipt. They lie to patients families in order to keep them in treatment longer than necessary so that they can continue receiving the insurance money. I know a lot of other places have a waiting list, but take my advice and wait vs. going to Parkside. And don't bother looking at their website - the facilities look absolutely nothing like the pictures and are in severe disrepair.
A New Start – I went into Parkside on December 29, 2011. When I went in I was beat up and torn down. I was not one of the best people they have had. I was mean and hateful to the staff and other residence. I was in thier for 21 days. After reading some of the reviews I needed to set the record straight. I feel Parkside saved my life, they gave me the up most of care. From the time I went in until the time I came out Parkside was thier for me. The place is clean, food is great, staff is nothing more than professional. If someone left thier in no better shape than you was when you went in than I think you shouldn,t have went until you was ready. I cant wait till I can get a job thier and give back what Parkside gave me and what I can give back to others, THAT IS A NEW LIFE.
No Place Is Perfect, But You Can Be Somewhere Far Worse! – I have read every post about Parkside, and although I do agree with some things, others have completely confused me. I have been to Parkside numerous times for detox (and no my multiple stints there are not proof that they don't know what they are doing, just that my insurance sucks, would only pay for 3-5 days of detox, no long term care, and I wasn't ready to quit). Anywhere you go there will be people you don't like, especially for us addicts who are so used to a substance running our lives that when someone tries to tell us a different way to live we immediately reject it. Yes the food isn't the greatest, but at least you are getting 3 meals a days plus a snack. If you were a junkie on the streets would you be eating so well? The majority of the staff are some of the most caring, comforting, non judgemental people in the world. The one problem I had that was of a very serious nature with a male counselor was handled swiftly and professionally. I personally find this place to be a Godsend, and wish my insurance would allow me to do my residential treatment there, I would prefer it so much over the alternative. I go back in tomorrow for my 9th time to detox, then off to receive long term inpatient care elsewhere. I am so greatful that I have the opportunity to go back, as I know many people (addicts) with no insurance, and no way to get the treatment we are afforded at Parkside. You definitely get out of this place and situation what you put in, and for the 1st time I plan on giving it my everything. I hope that if you are suffering from an addiction you will seek help from Parkside, as we all know the alternatives to treatment are far worse than anything I have read in any of these reviews (jail, institutions, & death). Thank you for your time.
The truth about The Woods at Parkside – I am writing this review neither as a disgusted patient, or a disgruntled employee. I was an employee who feels that this institution is a detriment to its patients.
Where to start; first off this “hospital” is a FOR PROFIT institution operated by Oglethorpe Inc.
Oglethorpe’s main goal is to make a profit by lowering operational costs, and maximizing the use of what it has at its disposable. This means one thing, using the most “cost effective” treatment, not the most effective treatment. The Woods at Parkside uses several different treatment modalities to “help” its patients; group therapy, client lectures, peer support, and individual case management, not individual counseling! There are many clinical studies that show these methods to be the least effective in treating addiction, and instead, advocate motivational interviewing and client centered therapy (meeting the client where they are at) as being the most effective.
The clinical director of the Woods at Parkside, Dr. Bradford Price, was a one-time clinical director of Glenbeigh, which is part of the Cleveland Clinic. He was released for inappropriate behavior toward clients, and on several occasions, was heard belittling clients at the Woods at Parkside, and insulting them. I specifically remember him referring to one patient, who was a former student at the University of Akron, as “zippy”, in front of the entire client population, in an insulting manner. This client later passed away from a heroin overdose.
The clinical staff is overloaded, often working 55 hours per week on a 40 hour salary. There is no mental health counseling at The Woods at Parkside; it is not licensed to do so. There is case management, which is “telling” the client what they will do when they leave. These directives are mainly attend AA, NA, or whatever 12 step support group it may be, and stay away from bad people. This is not “meeting a client where they are at”. What good is it to tell someone them do something, if they have no intention of doing so. This is the way the Woods at Parkside operates. It tells its patients what to do, no asking them what they are willing to do, and work from there.
I really could go on and on, about how horrible the facility is in terms of physical appearance. It is disgusting. Stained chairs with who knows what, moldy showers, holes in the walls, ants, floors coming apart, horrible smells, and on and on. It is a very unsanitary facility. I can remember one treatment assistant who was disciplined because he would sanitize door handles every hour, all because it was using up supplies ( mind you there are 42 patients who use the same door to exit and enter the common areas, a orgy of germs).
I really don’t feel like writing a book on why you should not send your loved one to Parkside, but I could. Everything from an unsanitary facility, a burnt out clinical director, low cost treatment modalities, and Medicare fraud, yes that’s right, FRAUD!! It’s called Medicare fishing. Oh, and did I mention that it costs 1000.00 just to be admitted no matter the insurance, and when you have no money, you’re out the door? If you love your addicted family member, send them somewhere else. It is a dysfunctional facility, and solely exists to make one family wealthy.
Awful Experience and Treatment Center – Patient for 10 days late summer 2011. After my experience, went to the Hazelden Clinic. Been sober 110 days.
Facility and Housing
While I was there I heard this was a Hospital from the 1950's or around that area.....well.....I imagine no improvements have been made since then either. This facility is in desperate need of repairs. There are holes in the walls, wires running every which way, etc. It is not very clean either in common areas. The "detox lounge" is one of the most disgusting rooms I have ever been in. The furniture in there has stains which I could only think are piss and sh%% (from the smell of the room). It is absolutely disgusting....and you are forced to cram in there every morning at 6am to see the doctor (will get to healthcare later or lack there of).
The bedrooms on the "detox floor" or I guess the "second floor" are absolutely disgusting. The carpets have stains on them, are filthy, and are just generally AWFUL. The beds? The mattresses are worse than what you slept on at summer camp. The beds in general need to be completely replaced. The bathrooms are equally disgusting and dirty. This is not a place you want to stay in while you are going through withdrawl and want to be somewhat comfortable when otherwise feeling like sh**.
The one positive is the rooms are FREEZING COLD. I personally like a cold sleeping environment and was especially nice when going through sweats, hot/cold flashes, etc. My only recommendation is to bring additional blankets and a real pillow.
The 3rd floor or "resident floor" (after detox) is much nicer. It looks like it was remodeled within the past 10 years. Still not a great living environment, but better than the main floor.
Response to Review – As a current employee of The Woods at Parkside I feel the need to respond to the comments of OSCARDELA. The one sided review of this review is incorrect and the opinion of a client that has come in with a less than positive attitude.
Did we wake her at 4:30 am? Yes. All assessments for detox clients are performed every 6 hours, regardless of the time that clients are admitted. This is not only for their own safety but also the times that they are given their detox medication. Did she have to see the doctor at 7:00 am? Yes. The doctor is there every morning and sees every detox patient every day to asses their health. As far as the employees being "very rude and very ghetto", and all hired from the east side of Columbus, I find that offensive. First of all, to generalize the east side is ignorant. The employees are from all walks of life as are the clients. One of our purposes is to create structure in the lives of people that have otherwise lived in chaos for years. I can tell you that every employee in that building cares greatly for the clients or we would not be there. Alot of us are addicts and we have empathy for those who are suffering and trying to make their lives better. Ants and roaches? I have never heard that complaint. Holes in the floors and walls? I would need to see the area she is referring to as I have never seen them. I cannot speak for the cost as that is not part of my job description. I can say that I was willing to pay any amount of money to save my life. We have snacks available for all clients 24 hours a day as well as 3 balanced meals. A vending machine with snacks does not even exist. I have never seen or heard of a complaint regarding an employee addressing a client is any manner other that professional. Any and all "questionable" behavior that clients find inappropriate has been addressed by the highers up. We have practices in place to avoid any such activity.
Is Parkside perfect? Of course not. But, we are all there for one reason and that is to save lives. We cannot please everyone but for those who truly want to get well, Parkside is a wonderful institution. I should know, I was a client in 2007 and I am still "clean" today.
PARKSIDE AT THE DUMP – Heard this was one of the nicer places in Columbus. I got there and all checked in at 1230am. Got woke up at 430am to see the nurse then sent back to bed till 7am to see the doctor. People very rude and very ghetto. I think all the hired help were people from the east side of Columbus. The place was a dump. The bathrooms are full of ants/roaches. There are holes in the floors as well as the walls. I though for 500.00 per day this would be a bit nicer. I can not believe this place charges insurance 3000.00 per week. On top of everything if you want snacks you have to buy them out of the vending machines. You got to be kidding me. I could not even have my electric toothbrush. You are not allowed to have anything with sugar/caffiene. The staff treat you like you're a second hand citizen. I would not send my worst enemy there. The male staff members also flirt with and hit on the female residents there and make advances towards them. I would not send a loved one there if they are a female.
Awesome people...but.... – The personal at the the woods are top notch people forced to work in a building that is falling apart, single glass windows that let cold arctic air in at night keeping the rooms at a chilly 40-45 degrees. The food looks great, tastes like crap. The beds, dressers, showers, toilets, basically the rooms need updated. Even the linens need updated. I'm very thankful for the work these people do, and hope they can turn this into a top notch place for all people. The people working there are rated a 5 star, the building a 0 star. Money makes the world go round, maybe people could donate to the building fund and get the building either replaced, or rebuilt. This is a necessary place for help. I was on prescription drugs, opiates for my back, for 6 years, never abused them, took as prescribed, they helped me get back to normal in 5 days. Thank you.
Wow.. can you beleive it? – I wanted to make the buying public aware of some of what's going on in "The Woods" recently and African American IOP counselor told a client who was voicing a concern to "Remember, you knocked on our door, we didn't knock on yours!" This same counselor used a lecture to voice her opinion on same sex marriages??? I suspect she has a Girlfriend she wants to marry, so I get it, but is that the time and or place?
An employee was also removed by federal agents with AR15 assault riffles at the ready!!!
There is a reason that when AA was formed they had a "Non-Addicted" majority on it's board of trusties. Crack heads don't make good managment, clean or using!!!
Chauncey, you can dress up a crack head and put suspenders on him...but then you just have a dressed up crack head.
