Editorial Review for Village Bookshop – by Karen Sottosanti
History
Village Bookshop is in the former Linworth United Methodist Church (dedicated in 1889). The building was reborn as a bookshop in 1969; current owners Gary and Carol Friedlinghaus took over in 1983.
Setting
The steeple and distinctive church windows are still there, but books are now piled and shelved all over the building. Large sections are devoted to art, photography, the performing arts, sci-fi, architecture and archeology.
One More Time
Although most of the books are publisher overstocks--"new" books (six months to a year old) that weren't sold in "first-run" bookstores--the store also carries brand-new, out-of-print and used books. It also buys used books from its readers.
What You'll Spend
Village Bookshop offers 50 to 90 percent off the cover price of its publisher overstocks.
The War Collection
Gary is a huge Civil War buff, and he expanded the military history and Civil War sections until they became the largest in town.
