Editorial Review for Champions Golf Course – by Bill McComb
Champion in Name and Deed
Champions municipal golf course is a first-rate facility, rated by Business First magazine as Central Ohio's most challenging public course. The track sports hilly, mature terrain, excellent architecture and difficult sloping greens. Ball placement is everything here and Champions will force you to use every club in the bag.
Just the Facts, Mac
Designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., this is a par-70 that spans over 6,555 yards. It carries a rating of 71.2 and a whopping slope of 127. If the course itself becomes too frustrating, full practice facilities with driving range, putting green and chipping areas are on-site. A Champions Walkway honors those who have distinguished themselves on behalf of the City of Columbus.
Long Greens Without the Long Green
Greens fees are like all Columbus public golf courses: reasonable. Champions is a popular facility for leagues and outings, so call ahead for your tee time.

Nice bent grass fairways, nice greens, nice trees, terrible bunkers, bad pin placements, and a couple of really dumb holes unless you like blind tee shots and a quirky par 5. All and all this course is overpriced.
Pros: bent grass tee to green
Cons: bad bunkers, blind tee shots, price

Champions is challenging for those that are not used to a target course. Many of the holes require an accurate tee shot because of the surrounding trees; more important is the approach shot to smaller and sometimes very thin greens. For those golfers that have learned to play a slice or a hook on an open course, this course will add about 10 shots to your score. A side note, the subsidized housing nearby provided loud and obnoxious rap music that was at first comical, but became annoying after you realize it will be heard throughout the entire round.
Pros: Challenging, Availability, Inexpensive
Cons: Slower Play, Condition of Traps
