Editorial Review for Ohio Theatre and Ticketmaster Outlet – by Bob Fitrakis
History
Two years after noted Scottish architect Thomas W. Lamb built the grand Palace Theatre in Columbus, he topped himself with the 2,779-seat Spanish/Baroque Ohio Theatre in 1928.
Attention to Detail
The obsessively ornate theater came complete with its own orchestra and a theater organ that rises up from beneath the floor. Like many 1920 theater palaces, seating is multi-tiered at an extremely steep angle.
Across From the Statehouse
In the old days politicians could walk across the street to catch movies, plays and vaudeville antics--just like in the legislature.
Dodging Demolition
By 1969, urban decay left the majestic theater facing a date with the wrecking ball. Before it could be torn down, Columbus citizens mounted a memorable "Save the Ohio" campaign.
Today
The Ohio is the home of the Columbus Symphony and regularly features BalletMet, concerts and a popular summer movie series.
