Editorial Review for Ray Johnson Seafood – by Kae Denino
Background
Okay, Ray Johnson's has really been open since 1907, which was quite a while ago. The place has got several reviews taped to the walls that are older than the patrons, but don't you worry, the fish is still fresh.
The Food
Two things are going on here. One is the lunch crowd, coming in for fish sandwiches and soups. These are fine, fine things, but basic. The sandwiches taste like those in the fifties, clean and plain, with definite emphasis on the taste of the fish. You may also buy fish to prepare at home, and it's a little cheaper than other markets, but still fresh and good.
Who to Bring
This is not a snazzy place to take a first date--it's none too pretty. Just a fish shop run by a coupla ol' timers, with no tables to speak of, the smell of fish clinging to your clothes and the phone ringing off the hook with requests for bisque. This is a terrific place to buy fish for dinner, come home, scrub yourself to bits and grill the fishie with a nice buerre-blanc on the side.

I go to Ray Johnson Seafood mostly to buy fresh fish. But they also have three or four excellent soups on the menu which you can take home (or to the park) in leakproof containers. Their fish sandwiches, desserts and side dishes are also excellent. The store is very clean, and the staff is helpful and funny. And they're located just a few doors down from the Hawk Gallery, which is always worth checking out.
Pros: inexpensive, good parking, fast service
Cons: good food, clean, a fun place
