Editorial Review for L'Antibes – by Terry Ward Libby

The Scene
Reservations are a must--there are just 14 tables and weekend nights book up quickly. Candlelit tables are nicely spaced for intimate talk.

The Food
Owner Dale Gussett is the presiding chef. His cooking style is classic continental, and the menu varies based on the availability of fresh ingredients. He labors for hours to prepare deeply flavored demi-glace and sauces. Food is served in portions that will allow you to enjoy three courses comfortably. Buckwheat crepe with a trio of caviar is an excellent appetizer. Salads are inventive, such as organic baby spinach topped with rings of calamari and doused with hot sesame oil and champagne vinaigrette. Don't miss the veal sweetbreads served in a light sauce of noisette butter, lemon, chardonnay and capers. Gussett orders whole fish and scales them himself to insure freshness. He even bakes his own crusty house bread.

For the first 20 min. at L'Antibes, I just wanted to leave. The atmosphere is horrible. you feel like you are literally in someone's bedroom. There is no ambiance, or refined atmosphere, it is litterally the size of a bedroom, and it is painted light purple. The food turned out to be excellent. So yes I would recommend it, but when spending that kind of money, you want to feel pampered and special. I did not feel that way in this small underdecorated restaurant.

Pros: wonderful authentic food

Cons: Terrible setting and room

We've eaten at French Laundry and Charlie Trotter's so I think we have some sense of perspective. For us L'Antibes is our favorite Columbus restaurant. We have taken friends and family over the years and have never heard anything but glowing praise. The pheasant and duck entrees are my favorites anywhere. The onion soup is incredible. The wine selection is good and very fairly priced. Overwhelmingly 5 stars!
