My husband and I (and two friends) got throwing up/diarrhea/fever food poisoning here!! When we called to inform management, both managers were disrespectful and would not acknowledge that there may have been an issue with their food. We could not believe it when one member of staff said "it's just a coincidence." Let me tell you folks, I have a BA in Biology, am licensed to teach biology, anatomy, physics, and chemistry in Ohio, and am going after my master's in Biochemistry. I know a thing or two about bacteria and food borne pathogens, so my advice is STAY AWAY from here! We even had a doctor confirm all 4 cases of acute food poisoning. Ps. I have never filed a complaint with the BBB or health department before my experience with this restaurant. Don't waste your money here.
Go to another location...terrible service here. – I wish I could have given this location ZERO stars. I requested to be moved to another table that had other people at it, not wanting to be alone at a table because I thought that our service and our entertainment would be affected, and I was right. I let the manager know that I was unhappy at the table I was at, and he just laughed it off, saying we were lucky to be alone. The waitress rudely denied to move us to another table that was occupied by more people, and forgot to bring our rice, as well as bringing me the wrong drink twice. The cooking show lasted all of 4 minutes, the food was over-oiled and he did not do anything entertaining. That was just the beginning of my bad experience, when I asked to talk to the manager to let him know I was unhappy with the service I received, he was EXTREMELY rude. Not only did he talk to me in a condescending tone of voice, after I told him I was here for my boyfriend's birthday he said that I was "disparaging" my boyfriend's experience at the restaurant and TOLD ME that my own boyfriend would not want me to ruin his night by bringing this up. Chris, the manager who spoke to me, denied me any compensation or discount for my unhappiness with all facets of service I received, from the food to the service to the management, and about put me in tears when he talked to me so rudely. I will NEVER be back to this location, there are plenty of other newer, cleaner, classier Japanese Steak Houses in Columbus that would never treat a customer how I was treated at this location.
Sakura! ...... sauce – Nothing beats it at the downtown Japanese Steak House. We had a huge family dinner there tonight. It was deelish! We used to go there quite often. But, got away from going there due to the growing hibatchi options in the area. Overall, parking was easy, we were seated quickly and the food / service was very good. We are putting it back into the family dinner night out rotation!
Disrespectful Staff & Owners- STAY AWAY – The WORST experience I've ever had dining--and maybe personally too. Read below and STAY AWAY!
My colleagues and I went to The Japanese Steakhouse for my birthday lunch, and one of my guests had an eating restriction due to religious purposes. My guest brought a small sandwich so that she had something to eat during our lunch hour, and during the meal not a single staff member said a word about it. On our way out, a woman working there (dressed in sweatpants and a tattered t-shirt who looked like she just rolled out of bed) stopped to let us know that it was the restaurant policy to not bring in outside food. "No problem- she just couldn't eat the food here due to religious purposes" we explained, and proceeded to leave the restaurant. When we were about a block away, the same woman proceeded to follow us and continue to tell us about their ridiculous policy about outside food and how they could prepare the food to meet her dietary restrictions (which is completely false), and continued this conversation for about 5 more minutes while we stood outside in the freezing cold. It was the most ridiculous display of ignorance I have ever seen, not to mention embarassing and disrespectful to my colleague. When I called the restaurant later to complain, I asked to speak to the owner and proceeded to tell the owner about our experience. When the woman I was speaking to was complete unapologetic and stood up for her staff member's behavior, I asked if she would be having a conversation with the staff member, at which time she admitted that the shabby-dressed, disrespectful woman who had ruined our meal WAS the owner, and she was "pretending" to be someone else over the phone. Never once did she apologize for her ignorance, and we will never, ever return to this restaurant. I usually love to support local businesses, but this establishment doesn't deserve my money and patronage--or anyone else's for that matter. Drive down the road and go to Genji...the food is better there anyway.
Good but not great – It's good and worth going - but not great.
I've got to admit I'm a bit of a foodie and with all the hibachi places out there to eat at they must measure up, at least in my opinion, to the Iron Chef located in Cincinnati, OH. DO NOT confuse this with the one in Pickerington.
The Japanese Steak House certainly measured up with the other hibachi places in food quaility. The cook we had last night (Thursday 08/26/10) was good and he did a rather unique thing with the fire in that he lit it from fire from his hand. That was pretty cool. The service was okay, but not great - never came back to fill water glasses. Also, if you're a fan of the "yum, yum sauce" which if you don't know is usually a pretty good sauce that most hibachi places have. However, to my surprise The Japanese Steakhouse did not. They had a chili sauce and a ginger sauce for dipping. They also do not have teryiaki sauce - another disappointing surprise.
However, they were one of the few hibachi places that actually cooked my filet mignon like I wanted which was medium rare. Also, instead of drowning the rice and vegetables and rice in butter they used it sparingly and the meal was the much better for it.
Good place and entertaining – We like this place a lot, we took our kids here for the first time and they thought the cook was really neat and his tricks were "cool and funny", like when he tossed the shrimp around and threw the tails in his hat, pocket and even at the waitress lol. The only thing my son and I didn't care for was the salad dressing, the onion/garlic flavor is strong and it didn't really agree with our stomachs. Wish that they gave you another choice in dressing such as a ginger/sesame oil type of dressing. But I do love the rest of the food and their green tea!
Terrific – We brought my 4 yr old son to the restaurant. This is the 2nd time we've been to the restaurant and the service has been excellent, staff has been very courteous, the food was really delicious and it was alot of fun for all of us. It came to about $60 for 3 of us which I consider a little pricey, but it was worth the money.
Was forced to pay for items not ordered or consumed! – I have never been more apalled at the lack of customer service, as I was during lunch at the Japanese Steak House!
I went in for lunch, and ordered a steak and chicken combo from our server. Soon after, the chef came and started cooking. When he went to serve the first meat items, he tried to give me shrimp. I told him I hadn't order shrimp, then I repeated my order of steak and chicken. The chef called back for more chicken to make my order, and I thought that was the end of that.
When the bill came I noticed I had been charged the price for steak and shrimp and not steak and chicken. A difference of 3 dollars. I told the server that she hadn't adjusted my bill for the error so she called the manager over to speak with me.
YOU WON"T BELIEVE THIS!!!!
The manager told me that my steak portion was larger because I had originally ordered steak and shrimp which came with larger portions. When I told him that I had never ordered steak and shrimp, he said that the server would disagree and so would the chef!
He went on to say he could call them both over to tell me what I ordered if I would like! I told him that wasn't necessary and it didn't matter what they said because I didn't have shrimp and the chef served me all portions after I declined the shrimp and repeated my origional oreder.
The manager refused to acknowledge this comment and walked away from the table. Leaving the bill. No one returned to the table and I had to go over to the bar tender to close my check!
I have been a server in several restaraunts in Col. and I know that this is not the way to treat a customer! I will never go back to the Japanese Steak House.
Kobe is much better in food quality and service!
Never Ever on a Monday – Visited on a monday night, granted, an off night, but the chef was a little off too. His best trick was flipping shrimp tails in a bowl, as no other tricks occurred, the meat (beef and seafood) was overcooked, and the fried rice tasted like mush (without syrup). I couldn't believe how small the servings were for this nature of restaurant. The bean sprouts were undercooked, and the zucchinin/onion/mushroom was burnt. Maybe better on a different night, or get that cook out from behind the grill, PLEASE!!
