I was skeptical when my husband was transported to this hospital for chest pains at a job site. From Columbus, I always considered Riverside a leader in emergency and possible heart conditions. My immediate reaction was he was 37 and although I was in a hurry to get to the hospital, I hoped for the best and prepared for the worst.
Every aspect of care given to my husband was remarkable- ER, CCU, surgery, nursing staff and of course the doctors. I may be biased because they saved him, but the overall care provided to him and me during his 4 day stay was not what I expected, but what I received. His care was superior and would have been rated with a 10 on all scales. I realize his heart attack was a wake up for lifestyle changes, but his hospital of choice was based on location and where he was intended to be. I recommend this hospital for heart care and recovery.
Lousy hospital drive right by it and go to another one. – After visiting the ER one morning for swelling on my face and jaw, the er doctor told me it was a tooth problem and it was not his job to figure it out. Well I ended up back in the ER 12 hours later with cellulitis, a very serious condition when it's on your face. He didn't even examine me. Now I'm getting bills for every doctor I saw there. Don't they pay their doctors? Are these doctors getting paid twice? Insurance companies I'm sure just pay the bill and don't have time to ask questions. Am I going to get a bill from every nurse and maybe even the janitor? Drive right by this hospital and go somewhere else, you'll be glad you did.
Basic Respect – Recently a friend of mine was admitted to Mt. Carmel East. He was experiencing severe back problems and apparently had kidney issues once admitted to the hospital. He was diagnosed with multipe myelomas (bone cancer) and other issues. Once admitted, I checked on him everyday. He was incoherant due to morphine administered for pain control.
When I saw him, he was shaking uncontrollably. It was so bad his gown and blankets came off. He was on the 4th floor in front of the nurse's station in a room that had a glass wall. I walked in to see him laying in bed totally naked, shaking, with the gown and the blanket on the floor.
I was furious that anyone walking down the hall could see him like that. Come on folks, there is a basic level of human dignity that needs be protected. I know they are busy but when I got to the room, I turned around, the nursing staff was standing aroung yucking it up while a doctor was on a computer that faced the room. I yelled at them and one nurse strolled in and asked how he was doing. I explained my concern and she said he had done that at least 6 times......They should have checked on him 7 times......
I hope none of them or their family members are ever treated like that.....A total lack of caring.
Emergency Room Horrors – At the request of her family doctor, I took my 96-year-old mother to the emergency room in pain with both legs red and inflamed with a skin bacterial infection. I arrived around 7:00 PM and she was not taken in until 3:30 AM. She had to be admitted and when my son left at 6:00 AM to go to work, she was still in the emergency room waiting for a hospital room.
To make the experience more unforgettable, I had to deal with a Nazi nurse that was in a mission to enforce "hospital policies" that did not make any sense to me and she did not have the courtesy to explain. When my mother was checked in I told the nurse that she did not speak English. Immediately, she started dialing a number to call an interpreter. When I told her I was bilingual and could translate, she told me curtly that I could not serve as an interpreter because I was family and this was a hospital policy. She must have been psychic, because she knew I was family without ever asking my name or my relationship to the patient. Ironically, I ended up having to interpret anyway, because my mother could not understand the translator's voice on the speakerphone so I had to repeat her questions. At the other end, the translator did not understand my mother, so I had to coach her to answer in a way the translator would understand. What should have been 5 minutes took 20 and by the end my mother was very flustered and I was mad beyond words. Especially, when the questions she had to answer were the standard ones such as: For what reason you are here today? Are you allergic to any medication? What prescription drugs are you taken?
I have told my family and friends that unless I am unconscious or half dead and Mount Carmel is the closest hospital, I do not want to be taken there.
Email address – Why won't you (the Rule Makers) allow your department to have their email's listed? Have you ever left any thing of importance behind after a hospital stay or hotel stay? Getting a return phone call is impossible. For Pete's sake MCE should be more user friendly. Too many of us work for Company's that understand it takes half a working day to get through or to get Insurance cards replaced or one of the office's listed to call back!!!
