Editorial Review for Red Door Tavern – by James Ellison

The Scene
This eatery has been a Grandview landmark since 1964, well before the trendy hot spots on Grandview Avenue appeared a few blocks away. The tavern is an alternative for people in the area that do not drink bottled wine or wear a lot of trendy clothing--this is a spot for people that wear blue jeans and drink domestic beer. It does have a red door as well as plenty of wooden paneling and seating.

The Food
Every menu item is decent, though their signature sandwiches and hamburgers are the standouts. The Twisted Pelican is grilled turkey, topped by Swiss cheese with lettuce, tomato and onion on a house trademark pretzel bun. There are six, thick, specialty hamburgers to choose from, each piled high with extras such as chili, Cole slaw, or hot pepper cheese. Another favorite is Sally's Hillbilly--a fried bologna sandwich. If you are not sandwich inclined, try the pork chops or rib eye.

Insider Tips

Good for Kids

This is a kid-friendly place. The hostess can provide a selection of children's books to keep the youngsters occupied. There are also seven items on the children's menu including dinosaur bites--breaded chicken pieces shaped like a prehistoric lizard.

I live close and it has a friendly environment. Nice tv's for games, friendly bartender, and I actually like all the old woodwork and the decor. I was extrememly disappointed in the food though. Kinda overpriced for appetizers, it didnt taste fresh, and the portions were small and inadequate.

Pros: Cool decor, good parking

Cons: overrated food

Casual dining. Seemed to a Mom and Pop's Restaurant with a great variety of food. Cheap beer, good service and nice people made our experience worth while.

Pros: Cheap Beer, Good Menu, Good prices

Cons: bad parking, lighting
