Editorial Review for Nong's Hunan Express – by Lori Sutton
The Scene
Ambience is almost too fancy a word; except for a few Thai pictures and paintings on the wall, the decor is pretty spare. ("Express" is in the name for a reason. ) The menu, complete with brightly lit pictures, appears above the counter.
The Food
The kitchen is open, so customers can watch the cooks chopping vegetables at a furious rate and stir-frying large woks of beef and tofu. The carryout business is brisk, so nothing sits around very long. Pad Thai is spicy, with just the right amount of egg, peanuts and meat; curry dishes contain a pungent mix of lemon grass, shallot, dried chili, shrimp paste and coconut milk. Order kung pao chicken at most places and you'll just get chicken tenders with peanuts--here, it's tossed with water chestnuts, bamboo shoots, celery, bok choy and carrots. "Hot" really is hot, not "American hot," so stick with medium spice unless you're tough.
