Editorial Review for Spagio – by Terry Ward Libby
The Scene
Designed with the help of local artists, the interior is an unexpected mix of modern objects and handsome wooden furniture and fixtures. The bar, warmed by the wood-fired pizza oven, is especially nice for winter dining. In warmer months, relax on the ample sidewalk patio.
The Food
Arriving from Europe in 1980, chef Hubert Seifert and his wife, Helga, first opened an upscale, international-foods market on quiet Grandview Avenue; soon, Hubert's talents and colorful personality made him this town's best-known chef. The food at Spagio has been known to vary, but if "Chef" is in the kitchen, you can count on a good experience. The menu is extensive and reflects his penchant for rolling Italian, Asian, Southwest and even traditional American touches into what he calls European and Pacific Rim cuisine. Pizzas, for example, come with house-smoked duck, chorizo, black truffle puree and more.

So, you know the aroma that you experience in the restroom after lunch at a major corporation? You know, after all the farm animals you call co-workers get done at the feeding trough and decide to violently explode last night's meal all over the porcelain? Yeah, that's right, that description almost perfectly describes our experience at Spagio last night. Not sure where they acquired their so-called "seafood" being that there is no "sea" anywhere near Grandview, but I'm fairly certain it arrived packed against a longshoreman's taint who'd just worked a double and had irritable bowel syndrome. At least, that's what it smelled like. Between that and being told to "get f*cked" when politely requesting a few extra rolls by the troglodyte server.......needless to say, we will not be returning. DO NOT WANT.

This was my first and last visit to this restaurant. I had heard some positive things about Spagio, but unfortunately none of those came to pass during my visit. The wait staff seemed to toggle between bored and rude; although they did go through the paces, "friendly" or "helpful" or "knowledgeable" are certainly not the adjectives I would use to describe them. The food varied between mundane and poor. Especially disappointing was the wood-fired pizza, which is hard to find in Columbus, Although the crust was good, the toppings were boring, when they weren't downright inedible. Specifically, the pepperoni pizza included unchewable outer onion rinds, which had to be removed and transferred to the discard plate. Like pesto? You won't find it here. Your waiter will pour a pale puddle of plain olive oil on a saucer, slide a bowl of rolls across the table, and disappear for a while. On the positive side, the lobster bisque was excellent. The restaurant decor and setting is nice, but a little pretentious considering the location and the fare on the menu.
Pros: Decor. Setting. Street.
Cons: Pizza toppings. Wait staff not polished.
