Tips for The Top Steak House

A Columbus icon. Old school steak house. Low lighting and retro decor, but one of the best steak houses in Columbus...very romantic. Wife took me there for my birthday about 10 years ago, and we have been back twice since. The last time, last year, I got the 20oz Porterhouse which was cooked perfectly. Its hard to cook a large steak to order, but the Top chefs has it nailed down. If you are a steak eater, this restaurant should be on your "must go" list. Always a delight.

Wow - what a rip off!!. After reading the cooresonding reviews to this article I have to ask, when is the last time you have been to this place? Given a reservation on Mothers Day at a moments notice should have been my first clue. When you walk into the restaurant you immediately wonder, is this a steakhouse or a clip from Texas Chainsaw Massacre? It was so dark you can barely see when walking thru the door! A musty, unkept smell of old carpet and stale furnishings is hard to ignore. Upon being seated it took a better of 25 minutes to get our drinks alone, dinner was overpriced and tasteless, steaks were not prepared to even the most agreeable diners liking, lobster tails were LARGE, but extremely tough. I normally am not one to comment, my husband and I normally go to Hyde Park, Mitchells, Mortons, at least twice a month, but have never tried the Top. Food had to be sent back twice between our party of 8 and was still horrible. The service was slow and all of that could have been looked over if at the end of the day we had great food. Upon complaining to the manager (which is not a normal practice I promise you), who claimed to be part owner, he was COMBATIVE and RUDE! I have always heard such wonderful things about this restaurant, a GREAT food place but a hole in the wall, was the description I was given. This I wouldn't send anyone I knew with ANY food knowledge what-so-ever. I have no problem paying for a good meal, you get what you pay for usually in these establlishments, but this place was repulsive, right down to the manager/owners personality. Mortons here we come!!!

Terrific steakhouse: Get great service with intimate atmosphere worth the cost.. Excellent East side place to eat! As a Chicagoan, I was practically raised on Arnie Morton's great steaks, but The Top Steakhouse equals excellent competition around town in Columbus. The restaurant has lived up to its longstanding reputation on the many occasions that I have taken guests there to dine. The steaks are as tender and tasty as any I've been served at many places across the country. My persnal favorite at Tops is the filet mignon. Other menu items, like shrimp cocktail, are great also. Menu specials have included delicious oysters Rockefeller and beef Wellington. The service has always been very friendly yet efficient. The bartenders make great martinis. My friends enjoy the intimate atmosphere, which includes an interesting but subtle piano bar. A full course meal tab of appetizers through dessert might seem a bit pricey, but is less than other steakhouses and worth the value for a special dining experience.

Outstanding food and atmosphere. I live in New York City, where you can go to all of the great steakhouses. This weekend I had an outstanding time in Columbus, topped off by The Top Steakhouse. All the people who served and waited on us were superb, friendly, and couldn't be more cordial. The steak and ribs which my party ordered was better than any I've had at home. Looking foward to my next time in town.

No better steak, no better atmosphere!. We've eaten at steak houses all over Ohio and The Top is just that. Great steak, cooked just right. Piano, great bar and 1950's atmosphere. Service is second only to the food. Highly recommended for a romantic and enjoyable evening.

Great place. The Top Steakhouse is a customer of ours, and the manager gave us a gift certificate to try the place since we had never eaten there. The ambiance, food, and service were outstanding, and I would recommend this restaurant to anyone. One thing to remember is to get your wallet out, cause it is not cheap, but the overall experience is well worth it.

Best around. The Top is the best around. We LOVE the service -- Scott Truelove is the best Manager in town - and we LOVE the overall service and food at The Top. Another great meal at The Top tonight (and we've had plenty!)!!!! The specials cannot be beat, but more than that, the neighborhood feeling is the best. If you haven't tried this place yet, you are missing out! It's hard to share such a great secret, but The Top is better than anywhere else in Columbus! Better than the other steak places, and better than the bars for cocktails, too. This is my all time favorite -- I'd rank it in "The Top" Nationally!

An old-school steakhouse experience featuring great service and a moody atmosphere.. The Scene
It's no coincidence that the Top has been in business since the Rat Pack era--you can just imagine Frank and company huddling around the booths in the dining room, warmed by the fireplace light. A pianist and vocalist routinely perform jazz standards in the center of the space, serenading diners and bar conversationalists. A secondary dining room has large windows which, unfortunately, overlook the parking lot.

The Food
Before ordering, tables are served a cold plate of deli pickles and sauerkraut. For steak, there is no place better; the filet mignon is incredibly tender and mouthwatering. The surf and turf is also tempting, but the lobster tail can be served a bit dry. Unlike other steakhouses, all dinners come with salad and potatoes; large, basic side dishes like broccoli and asparagus can be ordered separately.

Should be higher. I find it hard to believe that Outback could have ranked higher than The Top. The Top has got what it takes to be much higher than a chain steak-house. Old time class and charm along with a great meal.

Best Steak I've Ever Had!. I've had a lot of steaks, and the Top consistently has the best I've ever tasted. Unpretentious atmosphere, and a value too, when compared to its high brow competition!
