Theatre under the Stars! – Our favorite summer night thing to do--Shakespeare in the Park. For a mere $5 per person, you can stretch out on a blanket or plop down your camping chairs, uncork a bottle of red wine, and settle down for a couple hours of great entertainment. Twelfth Night is reformulated with 60s flair--very Grease-like or Animal House-like in it's characterization of different societal elements. It left of laughing all the while. This theatre company puts on a very professional production!
The Bard's local standard-bearer. – Setting
The way to--literally--get your feet wet as an actor in Columbus is to do a stint with Actors' Theatre. The troupe's performances in German Village's Schiller Park Amphitheater are at the weather's mercy, and you'll need to bring your own chairs or blankets.
About the Company
Lately, financial considerations have required Actors' Theatre, now in its 20th year, to shave the musical from its yearly performance schedule, leaving two Shakespeare plays as the season's slate. Actors' raises funds for its performances by accepting donations at intermission.
This year's schedule begins with "Twelfth Night," arguably one of Shakespeare's most romantic comedies, which will play until July 8th. From July 27th to August 19th, the company will feature "The Tempest", the last play fully accredited to the Bard himself. The plays are free, and if you bring a picnic dinner or take-out from a nearby German Village restaurant, it's a cheap date.
Place of Which Dreams are Made – I had an opportunity to watch their performance of A Midsummer Night's Dream--it was absolutely wonderful. Although it is free, I think they deserve the donations they receive. I am looking forward to their next play, and I hope that they continue to provide the public with high quality entertainment. It is a nice alternative to the usual crap at the movies or other options one has in Columbus. The setting only adds to the drama (Bring a good cushion-y blanket and some picnic food!). The only annoyance I suffered was the entrance of late people, especially those with kids, who were not discreet about finding a place to sit.
