Editorial Review for Blue Sky Gallery & Gifts – by Karen Sottosanti
Background
In 1988, watercolor artist Maija Berzins opened Blue Sky in a Jaeger Street building that had previously housed Halls Pharmacy. About 60 years ago, the building also was the site of a movie theater. Today, the shop--which boasts two walls of picture windows--is a light-filled, inviting space that Berzins sometimes uses as a studio.
Family Business
Berzins and her daughter, Daina Dickens, create most of the art that Berzins displays in her shop. Berzins' paintings and Dickens' multimedia pieces cover the walls and lean against stands. On tables and counters around the shop, Dickens' bead jewelry and Berzins' smaller paintings are arranged. Berzins also carries other artists' work, notably that of local glass artist Christopher Tolbert. Pottery, small statues and boxes of art-quality stationery cards are displayed prominently.
