Columbus >Plank's Bier Garten
My boyfriend and I went in on a Saturday afternoon around 4:30, hungry and looking forward to a meal. I hadn't eaten there for years but occasionally order pizza to be delivered at work. I will not any more!
We sat down and were completely ignored. Not even one instance of eye contact from any of the workers. It wasn't that crowded at all. We waited for 15 minutes and left in disgust. Great way to treat your (potential) customers, guys.
The atmosphere is actually not that bad. That's where we got hooked...sorta.
I should have known something was up when everyone there was ordering pizza and not other food.
My wife had ordered the fish (cod) and I ordered the sausage. Both were a mistake. She ordered onion rings as well that ended up being fairly good.
Everything else was terrible.
We both stopped eating after a while knowing it would be a mistake to keep eating.
I'll never visit that place again.
Authentic homestyle faire.
Uh...I just moved here from Chicago, looking to have a homey comfort food experience after a long day of moving in and unpacking and I happened upon Plank's.
I WAS NOT DISAPPOINTED. I had the pork cutlet and navy bean soup. It reminded me of the German restaurant I used to go to back in Milwaukee where they served the authentic Ham hock and sauerkraut. The navy bean soup was PERFECT, sweet from the root vegetables and salty from a gorgeous piece of ham with the creaminess of the white bean---magic! The Pork cutlet was seasoned beautifully, juicy and tasty! It felt like authentic German food or better yet like my childhood friend Betsy Diekfuss' Grandmothers Sunday meal.
Of course there are a few things that could use some finessing but I like laid back places with a bit of an edge to it! Less uptight more neighborhoody kinda bar!
I can deal with snark, sarcasm---even bad service, but when it's good---it's just plain good. It's a family establishment for geez- sakes it's not a white table cloth kind of place.
Staff was friendly as a busy bar can be on a week night. Try it you may like it, you may love it...if the service is going to turn you off from enjoying good food, you probably shouldn't eat there, otherwise, Have at it!
Surprisingly good considering the reviews. I saw a lot of negative reviews here saying things like the place smelled like bathroom and the service was awful, but me and a buddy decided to check it out anyways and thank god we didn't listen to those reviews. The waitress was very nice, came to ask us how we were doing atleast 5 times. The pizza was fantastic, and my buddy ordered the bratwurst which he said was awesome too. We also got a pitcher of Warsteiner and 2 frosted glasses. We ended up spending a total of $26 on 2 meals and the pitcher of beer. I'd definitely go again. And the place didn't smell like bathroom at all, so maybe they sprayed Febreze before we went or something
JUST AWFUL. The whole place reeks of bathroom smells. The employees are smart alecks and sarcastic. The food is tasteless at best even the so called pizza.
Stick To The Pizza!.
I just experienced yet another dissappointing lunch at Plank's. I should have followed the advice of a friend who said, "stick to the pizza"! But I opted to have the "Roast Beef & Chedder Sub" described as tender, juicy, roast beef piled high with melted cheddar and banana peppers. Well ... if having one piece of roast beef folded over three times is "piled high", I must have been mistaken to actually expect some serious roast beef on this sub. Not only was the beef portion anemic, but the sub roll was so dry that the top was flaking off in big chunks as I choked this lackluster Saharian creation down ..... note to self = free refills of drinks a must with this effortless creation.
The other consistency with this place is the slowwwwwww, dispassionate service ... seems like "whatever???" rules here as I have never gotten outta here in under 1 1/2 hours for lunch! It took three trys to get my Dr. Pepper selection correct!!
Bottom line ... I'm done!! Unless I am in no hurry at all, plan to have only pizza, and drink beer on their outside patio (which is nice, except for the ever present bathroom smell), I will go to their Parson's Avenue location where the service is friendly and the food is far superior!
Sorry, Plank's!! No Subs For You!!!
Half Price apps mon thru fri... pizza night tues 4-7 ... sooooo worth it!!!. Their food is really good and very affortable. It could just be im German and love German food and culture...but their pizza is so good you wish they would make it accomidate the days of the week better.
Yuck. Recently ate at Plank's. First of all the entire place reeked of bathroom smell. It was really bad. The food was so averagely awfully I won't be going back.
Part of the OSU experience.... This bar captures the aura of 'old Columbus town' including the German heritage and the OSU experience. Plank's is a no-nonsense beer and food joint. Beer-selection consists of standard domestics and a good selection of imports (bottles and draughts). Menu includes pizza, German cuisine and standard American dishes. Pizza is of the highest standard and I can only think of 1 or 2 other places in the world with better pizza. Crowd consists of a mix of alumni, German Village locals and softball players. Game days (and especially post-game hours) are the best. Alumni are sure to appreciate its like taking a step back in time to those OSU days of old. Warm weather months can be spent in the garden itself. My wife and I never miss a chance to visit Planks when we return to Columbus for games or family visits.
If you're looking for a casual, unpretentious place to eat pizza and drink beer in German Village, this is the place..
Built in 1939, Plank's has a warm wood interior, hunting lodge feel that you don't see much these days. You don't have to dress up to come here. This was what German Village was like before property values skyrocketed and the interior decorators got their hands on it.
On The Bench
The Patio has lots of tables, chairs and picnic benches where softball players and regulars hang out and drink pitchers of draft beer and eat pizza. Softball is such a tradition with Plank's that they have their own team.
The pizza is tasty, with a thick, chewy crust and lots of toppings. You can also order American favorites like french fries, burgers, potato skins and poppers.
