Editorial Review for Franklin Art Glass Studios – by Karen Sottosanti
Background
Franklin Art Glass Studios, a major German Village tourist attraction, was founded in 1924 when the Helf family bought out turn-of-the-century glassmaker Von Gerichten. The studio moved to the Village in the early 1960s. In 1979, a fire devastated the building, but the Helfs rebuilt in the same location.
From Churches to Mansions
During the first half of the 1900s, the bulk of Franklin Art Glass' business was custom designing stained-glass windows for countless churches across Europe and the U.S. The company also made a name for itself by designing glass for Victoria's Secret and hanging lamps for Wendy's Old Fashioned Hamburgers45,000 lamps that were used in every Wendy's across the country. Today, a major part of its work is designing windows for new homes (especially in New Albany) and selling materials to artists and hobbyists.
The Studio
At the company's HQ on Sycamore Street, visitors can browse a selection of stained-glass lamps and other glass creations, look through its selection of glass materials or sit down with a staff member to plan a project. The business also offers classes on creating stained glass and provides repair and restoration services.
