Editorial Review for Newport Music Hall – by Tracy Zollinger Turner
The Scene
Since its days as an old ballroom theater, the venue has seen its share of wear and tear. But people don't come for the architecture. Good sight lines to the stage are usually easy to find, and air conditioning was just added in spring of 2000. When the balcony level of the club is open, the house can pack in up to 1,700 people. There is food available at some shows, but it isn't too consistent, so you may want to dine beforehand.
The Draw
In its previous incarnation as Columbus' Agora Ballroom, bands such as Jefferson Airplane and the Grateful Dead played the stage as up-and-comers. These days, the Newport books rising and established stars of all stripes of music each month, from 311 to Three Doors Down to Steve Earle.

I recently attended a concert at the Newport Music Hall. Everything would have been fine - the music was good, the beer is a little overpriced ($4 for domestics), and it was crowded. The main problem was it was below zero temperatures outside, and they didn't have the heat on!!!! We kept our coats and gloves on but eventually had to leave because it was SO COLD!! Tickets to the concert were $19, so you would think with a couple thousand people there, they would turn up the heat!
Pros: good bands
Cons: , crowded, overpriced

I've been to the Newport more times than I can count. It's small, but not cramped. Small enough to offer a personal experience with a band. The sound is great, though bouncers tend to be lame. But who cares about them anyway? The pit's always a good time and a lot of good bands play there. Plus you can just round the corner and meet your favorite artists afterward. I actually gave Joe Gittleman from the Mighty Mighty Bosstones a ride back to his hotel the last time they were in town. Righteous!
Pros: Smoky, Dark, Loud
Cons: Bouncers
