Editorial Review for Japanese Oriental Restaurant – by Lori Sutton
The Food
This is one of the least expensive places in town to have sushi. You'll find all your favorites, from tuna nigiri to California rolls. One of the more unusual rolls contains avocado and barbequed eel, topped with a big red dot of Korean chile sauce. Start your meal with edamame (steamed soy beans) and a small bowl of miso soup. But sushi is just part of the story--most of the dishes on the menu are Korean, or Korean-style Chinese dishes. All are served with several small side dishes of different tastes and textures, including spicy kimchee and pickled cucumber.
The Scene
The interior is fairly plain, but a vast improvement over the old décor. A sushi bar sits in the back, with a tv overhead. This is a non-smoking restaurant.

Insider Tips
Don't MissThe bulkoki, barbequed meat served on a sizzling tray with leaf lettuce wraps.
What You'll SpendEntrees are in the $8.95 range, and sushi starts at $3.00 for 2 pieces.

I hadn't been here for many years and ended up going back fairly recently. On my first visit, I had only gotten sushi. I remembered it even being amazing back then, so on my next visit I got the Chicken Bulgogi and a piece of Uni sushi. Wow. Not only is the setting amazing, but the food was just as amazing as I'd remembered. You get quite a bit with your meal, including various versions of kimchi and other Asian condiments/sides. The service was prompt and courteous. The dishes are amazing not just because of the taste, but you don't end up stuffing yourself. I didn't feel bogged down or overly full - So if that's your sort of thing, maybe you should go to one of the Chinese buffets around town. The meal was light, healthy and fulfilling. I can't wait to try some of the other dishes on the menu. I will definitely be going back again soon. Guys, take your dates here!
Pros: Great atmosphere, fantastic food, great service
Cons: Parking (but only if you mind walking - I don't!)

With all of the higher end/higher priced sushi places in Columbus (e.g. Haiku, Kooma, Tyfoon, Shoku, Asian Gourmet), Japanese Oriental is an unlikely diamond in the rough. The spider roll, spicy tuna and even fav's like Boston or Alaskan rolls are satisfiers among any who enjoy sushi - and you'll be satisfied even with the heartier portions at the same prices as those sushi joints listed above. You won't get the young progressive crowd here or the martinis and mojitos, but the ambiance is great for a date or even a casual get-together with one or two friends - larger parties may have to wait, but if you're looking for authentic korean dishes along with a side or course of sushi, this is the place to try!
