Not a Mexican Restaurant.
While searching for some good mexican food we came to this place, the reviews online were mostly positive--no one mentioned that they actually did not serve mexican food.
We were told to seat ourselves on the patio so we did--the patio was nice, but after sitting there for 10 minutes we figured we would just go ask the bar tender for our own menus. Imagine our surprise when the menu at a place called Astradas was filled with glorified bar food. Yes they did have chips and salsa and queso dip but about 90% of there menu consisted of burgers, sandwiches, and fries.
There was nothing Mexican about this place, I do not recommend it for any reason--there are better patios in this city.
Cheap eats and a patio made for people-watching and slurping affordable margaritas.. The Scene Most patios in this town give you a great view of a dumpster, parking lot or busy street, but Estrada is right on King Avenue-- it's quiet car-wise and has lots of students walking around, which makes for good people-watching. The interior is fun, too, with splashy pastels, a pool table right in the middle and a used-book section.
The Food For starters, the salsa (made daily) mixes cilantro, peppers, red onion, garlic and canned tomatoes. Chips (served free with salsa) are thicker and crunchier than most, with lots of salt. In the main dish department, authentic Tex-Mexers should be happy: Cheap, tasty tacos and burritos abound. Chile rellenos are a common special, and they are rich and tangy, made with cheese, beef and all the right sauces. The refried beans are smooth, and the rice hits the spot.
Estrada is a nice campus area Mexican restaurant with patio seating so you can drink your Dos Equis and eat your enchiladas. Patio entertainment for us included sparrows sneaking chips out of the stacks of chip baskets every time the waitress was not near her station.
While not the most "authentic" Mexcican food you can find in the city, I found the chicken and beef enchiladas to have a nice kick. The salsa was also good, with lots of tomatoes and onions. This is definitely a restaurant worth trying if you are in the campus area.
