Nice place--if you want to be screamed at by a psychopath.
An independent music store with a well-thought out selection. Seems promising, but don't be fooled. I've been in here twice: once, I tried buying a CD, but was ignored by the owner, who was watching TV. I asked if I could buy something and he said "if you want" but didn't move from the TV.
About a year later, the owner was there again, and he started yellling at a customer (whose English was not very good) accusing him of misfiling CDs, but the customer insisted that he hadn't. My son started to quietly leave as when the yelling got loud, and Johnny asked us why we were leaving, and did we not like the way he ran his store. I told him that no, I did not, and we kept walking out. He followed us out onto the sidewalk, now screaming at us and calling us every name in the book.
He must be doing quite well if he can keep the store open and continue alienate customers this way. I am honestly concerned about the old man's mental health. I hope he is geting some help, but until the meds kick in, please stay away.
The place to shop--if you're an agitated connoisseur of American roots music..
The Scene
A small storefront in the middle of campus, Johnny Go's is on one of the few blocks that isn't currently under construction. The room is intimate and welcoming, and the bins are absolutely stuffed.
The Service
Most of the clerks here are young and pretty, save one: the owner. "Johnny Go" is the nickname of longtime writer John Petric, whose live music reviews in the Other Paper used to draw a legendary number of hate letters to the editor. The city misses hating him, but it's unlikely that you'll encounter his vinegar-flavored way with words at the store. He's very courteous to his customers.
On the Racks
If you love obscure blues, folk and rock, you will find all the critical favorites here, alongside the mainstream stuff. There is also a healthy selection of used CDs. In front, there are extra-cheap boxes if you want to roll the dice and spend two bucks on something you've never heard of.
