Best Japanese Food in Columbus.
I think at this point my husband and I have been to all of the Japanese Restaurants in the surrounding area & hands down this is our favorite one. Ba Sho is very unique, they are not a trendy fusion place that I think most Westerners are looking for. You will not find over the top fusion rolls or lots of weird combos. What you will find is classical Japanese home cooking. Perfectly prepared, consistent, and always well done.
The fish quality and knife work is hands down the best in town. Each piece of fish is skillfully cut, even, a nice balance to rice to fish. The appetizers are good, with a nice simple lineup. Though some of the better ones are only on the Japanese menu. The entries are amazing and always well prepared. They may have a more limited menu, but what they have is always done well.
The waitresses have always made us fell warm and like we were coming home. It is that kind of restaurant. I have only had one problem ever with the bill, and they undercharged me.
I read the other reviews and about tips and billing, I was a little shocked since we have sent hundreds of people there. Nobody has ever mentioned a problem. Accidents happen everywhere and computers are not always the easiest thing for people to handle. But if there was a problem I am sure had you talked to the owners it would have been corrected quickly.
not so sure.
I have been to Ba Sho before with just me and my husband and we really had a good time there. Food was good and so was the service. So when my big brother came to visit me from oversea, I thought it would be great to take him there for a fine dinner:)
Food was good (a bit overpriced to my taste but was good) and the server was very polite and quick. We were all satisfied up till we got up to take care of the bill. My brother insisted to pay and so we let him. He gives a waitress his credit card and signs his name on the bottom and comes back to our table. We were gonna take care of the tip with cash. Well, that's when the waitress came back to our table telling us that he didn't put down "tip" with his card. I quickly told her that we were leaving cash on the table.... She insisted us put some with the card. I mean she was very upset that we didn't! So we just decided to ignore her.. How rude of a waitress asking for tip?! I have never been to a restaurant where I felt "forced" to leave tip! Never again!
The real thing. Real Japanese owned and operated. Real Japanese food. No juggling pepper shakers. I’ve eaten here for more than five years. Favorite casual Japanese restaurant in Ohio. Nice sized portions, not too big. I have recommended this restaurant to countless people. No problems with the bill. Billing problems are easy - call them. Check your statement. Sometimes the online numbers are temporarily incorrect. It is inappropriate to damage peoples livelihood without talking with them.
DISHONEST, AND NOT WORTH THE TIME. I went to BaSho Japanese Restaurant on Tuesday August 10th, 2009 with my girlfriend. I had been to the restaurant in the past and always had a good meal and time. However tonight was the exception. The meal was below average and over priced. Now I am even more upset because I paid with my bank card and check my bank account today and somehow my bill was larger than what I signed the bill for.....yes the waitress added and extra tip for herself on my bill that I did not sign for! This is highly illegal and very dishonest! DO NOT EAT THERE! CROOKS!
Avoid - they charged more than what my receipt said. I always pay my tip in cash, and I paid 25%. When I checked my bank account they added 20% to my bill, when I clearly signed for a different amount. Meaning my waitress pocketed a 45% tip. Dishonest and illegal. My husband and I dined there frequently in the past. Never again. Very disappointed.
Well above average. I do like BaSho's but there are a few things that knock it down from a 5. The first are the lack of any lunch hours (dinner only.) There is also a lack of good Hiyayako, she said they didn't HAVE any? The last thing that can be annoying is the fact that they have a TV which they put on public channels to watch things like Jeopardy etc during the meal (I prefer no TV while I eat thanks.) The "mean hostess" that you see in other posts doesn't apply any longer because the former "Obaa-san" has sold the restaurant to another person; this however did not affect the food quality which is one of the best in the area. If you're looking for #1 service, food choice and can bear a slightly higher price, I'd head to Sushi Bistro Masa (though it's not quite as authentic feeling as BaSho because of the newer decor and a few menu items.)
Dissapointment. I read the reviews on citysearch and had high expectations for Ba-Sho. Sushi was sub-par, service was average. I could name 5-10 other places in c-bus I would go for sushi/Japanese other than Ba-Sho.
Best Japanese food... Outside of Japan. This is one of the best Japanese restaurants in the state of Ohio. Every major city I go to I make sure i try the japanese food and this is one of the best.
Great Food, Rude Staff. The food at Ba Sho is very good and authentic. The sushi has always been fresh, and the gyoza is amazing. I liked it better before 2002 when they still had all of the authentic japanese crafts on the walls and played japanese music. The grumpy old women who complained about us in Japanese was also very entertaining. A few of us speak Japanese, so it was always fun to hear what she was really saying about us (nothing nice). I would recommend Ba Sho to couples without children who love Japanese food, and don't mind a rude waitress. Ba Sho has many authentic and somewhat strange dishes. I recommend experimenting with a dish you would normally turn down...Eel doesn't taste the way you would think;)
Basho is better with new owner.. I liked Basho from the first time I ate there in 2002. The previous owner was a hoot. She was rude, obnoxious, loud, and scolded the workers in Japanese. I was always a little scared of her. The new owners are friendly and cordial. Today, I feel the food is as good or even a little better. You will see Japanese eating there all of the time. Be careful, it is easy to eat too much, but don?t worry. Its good for you.
