Steady Improvements, Now Very Good – I've been going to Bel Lago from time to time for years. This restaurant has become a very good restaurant that is often packed in the evening. Nearly all the seats have a good view of the water of Hoover Reservoir. In the summer you can sit outside & in the winter they have a high quality enclosure that brings that space indoors.
This restaurant has been successful at tuning the menu to eliminate the bad and add the good. I've gone there on dates, with groups of ladies, and with my daughter. It has never failed to please. It even has sorbet for those of us who are lactose intolerant. You can even make reservations online; just be aware that method might not get you outdoor seating on a crowded day.
To Go – The best thing going is the view. Not for eating...From the food to the service it is take it to go. Food makes a great dog bag.
Too Bad I Can Not Give Negative Stars – WOW! I spent $699.44 last year @ Bel Lago, 2010 ? but 2011 it will be $0! August 14, 2010 marked the very last time I will ever spend a $ @ Bel Lago. I got the hint that I was no longer welcome there buy a rude bartender, a owner that is blind too how his staff treats people & increasing prices and decline of quality. So to finish up, find another place to eat because you will be let down and crushed in your wallet
Will go to McDonald's before visiting here again – It started out with the host. I went with my hubby and dad tonight, asked the host if we can sit outside. She told us to wait while she goes out to check the tables. Took her a while, and she told us it will be a few minutes until the tables are bused. A couple came in before she came back, they also wanted to sit outside, so she told them the same thing, it'll be a few minutes. A few minutes passed, somehow the couple got their table first. Wow... I guess it's not first come first served. After she came back from seating the couple, she went outside one more time before seating us. I wasn't sure why, but I wasn't very happy (I was extremely hungry).
After being seated, (after a while) the waiter greeted us and he took our orders before asking what we would like to drink. It was kind of my dad's fault, as he came out and said what he wanted before the waiter asked about beverages, but I had to tell him what I wanted after my order (I was the last to order, and I waited a few seconds afterwards, but he still didn't ask what I would like to drink).
The bread came not long after, it was fresh and warm and very good. Not long after that, our food came. I had the Sea Bass Christina, hubby had the Almond Crusted Walleye, and my dad had the Tuesday special (it was chicken breast on something).
First of all, the potion is very small. My sea bass literally tasted the same as my hubby's walleye. The only difference I could tell was that the walleye was breaded and deep fried, whereas the sea bass was pan seared. The "jumbo lump crab meat" was actually as worded "jumbo," and I have say it was the best thing on my plate. The second best would be the roasted potatoes, then the sea bass and asparagas tied in 4th place.
My dad's chicken breast was smaller than my sea bass. I know the Tuesday special is fairly inexpensive ($15, my sea bass was $28), but still, it's chicken breast, they ARE fairly cheap. Anyway, he finished his dish even before I ate my few pieces of jumbo lump crab meat...
My hubby probably got the worst dish: the Almond Crusted Walleye. I had a little bit of it, two words: no taste (no fish taste and no almond taste). He worked pretty hard trying to finish it, the walleye fillet had bones in it... the waiter took away his plate when he was still working on it, but he was actually happy. It was that bad.
Oh, my hubby did bring up the bones probably to the waiter at the end. The waiter went in and got the manager (I think she was the manager). The manager appologize and all.
Overall, I think the view is nice, the service is ok, the food is horrible. I used to go there when it was still Hoover's Grill. It was more family oriented and the food was realllllly good! I haven't eat there ever since it turned into Bel Lago, and I probably won't ever again. I rather drive further to Polaris and find something there....
very disappointed, overpriced, bad food – I had the scallops which were sandy, of poor quality, and extrememly overcooked. the portions were very small. nothing, not even the salad, was fresh. my wife's risotto was plain and bland. the food and the menu were unimpressive. i wish i wouldve saw that the Dispatch also gave this joint 1 star.
NOTHING HAS CHANGED - HORRIBLE FOOD, MGMT, SERVICE - BEWARE FAKE REVIEWS FROM MANAGEMENT – Like others I have repeatedly given this place additional chances after MISERABLE past experiences with both food, service, and management that does not care. AS OF SEPTEMBER 2008, NOTHING HAS CHANGED.
The view does not make up for how miserable this place is. The only people that seem to still go there are white trash people from Westerville and Sunbury, so unless you are one of those people, don't come here.
WINE TASTINGS, NEW CHEF, GREAT FOOD!!!! Unbelievable wine list. – We live five minutes from the Hoover Grille but we had hesitated to go there based on what our friends were saying. OUR LOSS! They had tried the grille for dinner during the summer in 2007 and were seriously disappointed. Our experience could not be more different. My understanding is that a new chef started in late 2007.
We have gone to the grille twice since that visit. Once for dinner on a Saturday in December of 07 and once on a Tuesday for a wine pairing dinner in January 08.
Our dinner was awesome. I had a steak (the prime rib special) and I was so impressed. The trend in restaurants seems to be that they buy prime rib precooked (like the stuff in the grocery store fridge) instead of actually cooking it themselves. Trust me, you can tell the difference. Our server said that they use a smoker to cook the steak. My hubby had the crab cakes and practically inhaled them. I didn't even get a bite, but they were large and looked good.
Last night we went to a wine pairing dinner. "A Tour of Tuscany". Six courses served with six wines selected to complement the food. The wine sellers were on hand to educate us about the wines while we were dining. The six items (scallops, langostinos, duck ravioli, osso bucco, veal meatball on a bed of risotto and a hazelnut crepe with marscapone ice cream and orange sauce) were unlike anything I've ever had in Columbus. The six Italian wines were spectacular. You could hear silence fall over the table as people had their first bites of each course. In addition to the amazing food and wine, the service was awesome. The table was set European style with 6 forks, 3 glasses etc etc and the service staff didn't miss a beat.
We now keep a close eye on the website for the wine tastings and dinners because they sell out so fast. We missed out on a scotch tasting last month because it was full and were lucky to get seats last night.
I can't say this enough--give this place a chance!
Best prime rib – My wife and I ate at the Hoover Grille last night and it was wounderful. Friends of ours had gone last spring and had a good time but were not impressed, we left impressed. Our server Jon was attentive but not pushy. He recomended the prime rib and swordfish, the two specials of the night. Let me tell you, the swordfish was very good but the prime rib was amazing. I am a meat and potato kind of guy so I have ate a few steaks in my day and this was one of the best cuts I've every had. I asked Jon why this was a special and not on the menu and he replied that they will be running the prime rib every weekend. For $21.95 we will be back another weekend. The rest of the staff was very friendly as well, a nice man who I assume was the manager stopped by and chated for a moment about our dinner and said that he as well was looking forward to haveing the prime rib for dinner. I highly recommend stopping in.
New Chef Rocks. Great Food!!! – We've recently revisited the Hoover Grille and was amazed by the new menu. My party tried several different appetizers and entrees and we were really impressed with everything. You have to try pasta sambuca. The beer selection is great, the wine list is the best around. and our server Eric was fabulous. Oh yeh, the Cheesecake Factory desserts were awesome.
Everything A+ except the horrible service! – We have made 3 trips to the Hoover Grill. What a great view, perfect location, amazing decor inside, good food, but.... I have never had worse service. We had reservations and even though there were empty tables we waited 15 minutes to get seated then another ten minutes for some to take our drink order. Forever then for our food and just overall very bad service. Such a great place but cannot imagine it surviving with such absolute horrible staff...
