Gahanna >Old Bag Of Nails Pub-Gahanna
Great Mothers Day Experience. We had not been back to the Old Bag since we had a bad experience a few years ago. There must have been a management change, because this time was excellent, the food was all hot and delicious, and the service was great. Friends of ours wanted to meet there yesterday evening for Mothers Day. We already knew there is no parking and we would have to park down the street in the Creekside garage and walk a block to the restaurant, so I dropped off the wife and kids at the front door. by the time I parked and met them inside, they were already seated with the two other couples we were meeting. They had called ahead, since we had 11 people, and they had a table ready for us that was out of the way, which was nice since we had 5 kids at the table. Even better is that kids eat free on Sundays, which is anything on their kids menu, plus a drink. It seemed like they were really prepared for being busy with families on Mothers Day, the waitress got our kids chocolate milks out to the table before she went to get our drinks from the bar, and we did not have to wait long at all for the food. We ordered the kids meals right away, along with some appetizers, and were impressed that we could get a healthy kids meal of grilled chicken tenders and a fruit cup, which was fresh cut up pineapple and melon, not something from a can. Our friends ordered the fried pickles and nachos as starters, which were both good. The menu was about the same as we remembed, and I ended up ordering the reuben, and my wife got a spinach salad with scallops. Like I said, all the food came out really fast, and I was definately happy with my choice. The reuben was a good size, the corned beef was really tender, and my fries were piping hot. The scalllops on my wife's salad were huge, and she loved the dressing that came with it. Our friends had been raving about the beer selection, and that is definately something improved since we had been there. The beers on tap were not what you see everywhere else - of course they had Guinness, but also a good selection of craft breweries like Founders and Dogfish Head. I got a Southern Tear IPA which I had never seen on tap before, only in a bottle. My wife was happy to get a decent glass of wine for six bucks, instead of 8 or 9 like most places. Since it was Mothers Day, they gave my wife a flower and a free dessert! This was a surprise, and a really nice touch. It seems like the Old Bag is really going out of thier way to give their customers good service, and to give them great value, and it worked! Our whole bill for the 4 of us ended up being under 40 bucks. We will definately be going back in the near future.
Not impressed. I visited last week, we were seated on the first level with another couple sitting across the room, the upstairs was practically empty. It took 45 minutes to get our drink order taken, then another half hour to get our drinks. The food finally came and was very dry and cold (the cheese on my burger didn't even melt). It was a horrible experience and the waiter acted like we were keeping him from something. I wouldn't recomend to anyone.
Don't Waste Your Time. Had dinner there on a Monday night. The server was pleasant and good. Had French Onion soup, which wasn't very hot and the swiss cheese didn't melt. The broth was too thick and tasted...grainy...which didn't have anything to do with the bread soaking in the soup. Only ate 1/2 of the bowl. Dinner was the French Dip. Bun tasted old and stale, the "ribeye steak" (yeah, right) was tuff, dry, overcooked roast beef-like pieces with no flavor. The "grilled onions" were still crunchy and raw, and the "dip" juice had an old, refrigerator taste. Only ate 1/4 of the sandwich. The iced tea was excellent. The meal was extremely over-priced for the quality of food I received and I will not return.
New Years Eve Disappointment. (New Years Eve) could not locate parking within two blocks in poorly marked and dimly lit area. Asked for seating with Creekside view, the young hostess with attitude said they didn't have any seating there. We were seated up front next to a large party with noisy kids. Restaurants should respect an adults right to a relaxing evening. Is no place sacred or off limits to kids? We've seem them seated at the bar with coloring books and crayons (not here-just making a point). Service was less than acceptable, timing wise and the waiter's knowledge of the menu. At 7:30 p.m. they were out of their two main appetizers. No excuse for that! Rib Eye was being substituted for the NY Strip Steak for the same price. A waste of our money and our evening.
