Editorial Review for Dixie Kitchen & Bait Shop – by Citysearch Staff

The Scene
In this tiny room, seemingly not much bigger than your kitchen, the roadhouse decor is crafted from rusty advertising signs, an Ethyl pump, old license plates and vintage kitchen stuff. Dinged-up coffee, potato chip and watering cans are crafted into light fixtures. A mixed crowd hums, and tables turn quickly. Raw, old-timey blues of the Robert Johnson ilk complete the mood.

The Food
A basket of warm, golden-yellow johnnycakes arrives first, a sign of good things to come. Fried-green tomatoes are truly out of this world, with a hard crust and hot, juicy interior--devilishly good with a splash of the house-label hot sauce. Oyster po' boy is killer, slathered with spicy remoulade. Blackened catfish fillet is a good, basic version but needs a splash of sauce. Gumbo is earthy brown, brimming with tender shrimp, chicken and andouille sausage; jambalaya bites back. For dessert, hot, flaky peach cobbler is a must-try.

this place is one of my favorites in the city. good food, good service. long waits, yes, but I know to expect it and it's worth the wait. my favorites are the fried green tomatoes and blackened catfish. I don't really like the desserts, because I don't like peach cobbler, but everyone else does.

Pros: great food, great service

Cons: long wait
