Editorial Review for Riverfront Trail – by Tracy Zollinger Turner
The Project
In the 1970s, Columbus' Recreation and Parks Department started polishing up the bike trails along the Scioto and Olentangy rivers and Alum Creek. The project stalled in the '80s, but has regained momentum in recent years at the behest of Mayor Mike Coleman and the Columbus city council.
The Trails
The Olentangy River Trail stretches for 13 miles, from Broad Street downtown north and into Worthington. A four-mile trail stretches from downtown to Rte. 104 along the Scioto. By 2003, the city has plans to complete another trail from Confluence Park to Upper Arlington, along the Scioto and Griggs Reservoir.
Try These Spots
The campus area of the trail has undergone a serious transformation over the past two years: trails have been newly connected, pathways paved and landscaping completed. The trails also make easy connections to OSU's athletic fields. Walkers, joggers and riders crowd the paths when the weather is pleasant. The areas surrounding the Whetstone Park of Roses are particularly shady and scenic.
