Editorial Review for Ohio Historical Center – by Bob Fitrakis
Ohio Village
Ohio Village seeks to recreate daily life in a Civil War-era town. Visitors can observe craftsmen producing a variety of period items from woodcarvings to leather goods to baskets. Costumed historical interpreters busy themselves farming, cooking and playing games. Colonel Crawford's Inn offers a taste of the past, serving traditional midday fare. There's also music from the Ohio Village singers, but don't look for the roots of rap here.
The Society
The Ohio Historical Society runs the Ohio center, multiple historic sites around the state and an extensive library and archive. Founded in 1885, the OHS was created to collect, preserve and interpret state history.
The Center
The Ohio Center itself hosts an extensive exhibit that takes visitors through the history of Ohio, beginning in the Ice Age and ending in 1970. Temporary exhibitions often focus on specific industries or more contemporary history. It is best known for its pre-European history collections, with a large exhibit of Native-American artifacts.

Insider Tips
Play BallThe renowned Ohio Village Muffins are a 19th century-style baseball team adorned in period uniforms and playing by "gentlemen's rules." They occasionally draft a bystander to participate in the early version of our national pastime.

I had no idea that we have such a great little museum right here in Columbus!! The Historical Society itself is very interesting and I enjoyed the exhibits ranging from wooly mammoths and Ohio wildlife to Prohibition and Kilroy. The best part of the museum is in the back where they have a working replica of a Civil War-era town. We saw how people lived, learned, worked, worshiped and played back then. It was educational and really fun. We have out of town family visiting in the coming months and we plan to take everyone to see the Ohio Village and Historical Society. It is a good time for a great price!
Pros: Interesting, Educational, Inexpensive
Cons: No Free Parking
