Editorial Review for MadLab Theatre – by Bob Fitrakis and Karen Sottosanti
The Scene
The MadLab Theatre spent four years bouncing around in rented spaces before moving into an old body shop in 1999. Troupe members converted the shop into a 65-seat, black-box alternative arts space they call "The Lab." Co-founder Eric Myers wants to create artistic hybrids--a dose of performance art, a dab of video, a pinch of theater and a little live music. Mad Lab is essentially avant-garde and experimental, but The Lab itself is open to artists and musicians of every stripe.
The Draw
Mad Lab's first creation at the Lab was Myers' and Dan O'Reilly's 1999 multimedia investigation of violence in American culture, "AMericanWAY." Total Theatre rented The Lab in February to stage "Blood Eden," and MadLab spun the wheel with "Theatre Roulette" in May. The company holds art shows in its gallery space. Dance, spoken word, performance art and video, film, avant-garde music and old-fashioned rock and roll are all represented. It's a good place for artists to go stark raving mad.

I have been to this place twice to see local bands that I like and I would have to see if you are of the freaky persuasion, you'll like it, but it was not my taste. Dark and frightening are good ways to describe the building, the location, the workers, and the majority of the clientele.

I have only been to MadLab once but I had a blast! The entire troupe was funny and they kept the energy level high. One of my favorite parts of the evening was when they asked for audience members to throw out 2 random words and they proceeded to improvise how the 2 were related. Somehow they ended up tying jumping jacks and kiddie porn together. Now that is talent.
