Editorial Review for Drexel Grandview – by Karen Sottosanti
Setting
The Drexel Grandview, on Grandview's main drag, is almost entirely composed of its one large, grand screen. Its sister theater, the Drexel East, is a small, dim theater in Bexley with three screens and a hallway that connects it to the Drexel Radio Cafe.
History
When Jeff and Kathy Frank bought the Drexel East in 1981, it was a second-run, single-screen, double-feature theater. Today, it's a three-screen arthouse.
Here a Screen, There a Screen ...
The Franks also own the Drexel Grandview, but were forced to close their one-screen Drexel North for financial reasons. The couple recently signed with Nationwide to operate and program a 10-screen theater in the Arena District that will mix art films with serious mainstream movies.
Films
Independent flicks like "The Virgin Suicides" and "American Movie," plus quality films--"The Usual Suspects," "Life is Beautiful"--that make even multiplexes jump on the indie bandwagon.
Festivals and Events
Special Drexel events include the annual Sci-fi Festival, the Summer Kids Movie Fest, Oscars bashes, New Year's Eve parties and the Columbus International Film and Video Fest.

Drexel Theatres are one of the great things about Columbus. They are now owners, or partial owners, of 4 theatres--Grandview, Bexley (Drexel East), Arena Grand, and Drexel Gateway. These folks have managed to continue showing high-quality indpendent films, mixed with some more mainstream stuff at the Arena Grand, without compromising taste. Great movies, great people, great atmosphere!
Pros: atmosphere, people, film choices
Cons: parking (sometimes)

I wish there were more theaters like Drexel around. One screen, indy movies, fair concession prices. It's a nice change of pace from the hyper-mega theater chains with stadium seating and 34 screens. If only you could eat pizza and drink beer it would be perfect!
Pros: Local feel
Cons: Limited parking
