Editorial Review for Salumi – by Citysearch Editors

The Scene
The pig sign hanging outside this Pioneer Square hot spot could have come from the Middle Ages--appropriate, as owner Armandino Batali cures meats and makes sausages the way Italians have been for centuries. Crowds of regulars make the communal dining table an entertaining experience, but there are a few smaller tables that offer slightly more privacy.

The Food
Sausages come in sandwiches on artisanal bread, or can be cooked at home. Meats include lamb and pork prosciutto; two kinds of copa, including rarely found pig cheek; Tuscan finnochiona and other salami. Sample them all by ordering a full plate of either hot or cold meats. In addition, Salumi prepares sensational sandwiches like porchetta, meatball and spicy oxtails. Try a Pinzamonio salad (seasonal raw vegetables), soup or a daily special such as frittata or pasta. A counter in the front window showcases various family members making gnocchi and biscotti.

This was my first trip to seattle, to visit friends. I had heard all about this place and read the reviews. Many are good and a few are not so good. I myself, loved it. Yes the line was long (I am told the busiest days are fridays and all days in July/August) so I arrived at 11. I waited about 20 minutes. I had no clue what to order because it was a bit confusing. I asked for help and ended up with free tastes of everything (not to mention the frequent samples that were passed to the folks waiting in line.) I decided on the mole and mozzarella, with the mini baguette, which i understand is new in the last year, for folks who want a softer bread. My friend had the muffo. We shared, and we loved both. The people working there were extremely busy, but incredibly friendly. The customers all seemed happy. I am going to return next week and give it another whirl, maybe i will try the meatballs, i hear they are a bargain, and huge.

Pros: the best salami in the country

Cons: can be confusing to first timers, but ask for samples

I gave it one star out of respect to Mario.........My family went there after seeing it on No Reservations and because we are big fans of Mario, Anthony Bourdain, and cured meats. It was a Thursday around 11:00 am, waited in line for 30 minutes only to find out that they were out of the first 2 items we ordered. Since it was our first visit two of us settled on the meat and cheese plate thinking how could we go wrong. Well the meat was paper thin, dry and as tough as jerky, the bread was like shoe leather possibly because the server picked up a plate that was already made and sitting to the side, apparently for awhile. Two of our group ordered the oxtail sandwiches which were so greasy it was running down there hands and arms, again the bread was so hard that when you tried to take a bite all of the meat fell out. We were a group of four and could only find 2 seats so we asked the server if any other seats were available ( they DO have a back room seating area) but were told that we would just have to wait until someone left. The service was BAD, the employees RUDE, the food TERRIBLE. Armandino remarked on No Reservations that he never really intended for the place to be such a success and apparently his son's reputation is the only reason it is. I would not recommend it to anyone!
